The projects below have all been funded through APEEE Project Calls and were scheduled to take place during the 2020-2021 school year.
Calm Room
This project for primary students from all sections in Uccle aims at providing a space where children, especially those with specific needs, can relax and find a refuge during the break periods. Not only can they calm their senses, but they can also exercise their social skills in a smaller group while benefiting from a more structured environment. As it is available for all sections, children have the opportunity to play together and overcome language barriers. The plan is also to undertake animations aiming at enhancing children's emotional awareness, managing their own emotions and social skills.
Funds will be used to equip the room with necessary supplies, including possibly: cushions, CD player with audio books, story books in vehicular languages, individual and group games, toys to promote visual/auditory/tactile stimulation and art supplies.
Funding was agreed on the condition that the school agrees on a space dedicated to this activity. Parents should also be encouraged to donate some of the required material.

Three Well-Being Conferences
A series of three live online conferences organised by the APEEE's Well-Being Working Group and aimed at secondary school students and parents to raise awareness about topics of interest, such as: internet safety and the challenges/risks of social media, cyberbullying, affection and sexuality, mental health, mindfulness during COVID, and the challenges of adolescence. The conferences will be in French or English.
The Well-Being working group in its current form has a two-year track record of success giving parent conferences and student workshops. For this project, it was recommended that at least one conference specifically target students and that the Well-Being Group liaise with the Student Committee (CdE) to explore topics of interest.

Parents in TEAMS - E-Quipping Parents for Distance Education
A series of one-hour online training sessions on Microsoft TEAMS for education and tailored to the European school system, aimed at helping parents support their children with eLearning programmes. Many parents remain unfamiliar with the TEAMS platform that now touches their lives in so many ways. This project would provide parents with the know-how to help their children with their work at home, to support the school’s distance/hybrid/BYOD learning programme and to become more informed participants in the discussion about changing educational modes and methodologies, even after COVID.
These sessions will focus on the TEAMS modules specific to distance education: Assignments, Grades, Class Notebook (collaboration space, content library, personal spaces) looking particularly at how these are being used in the European Schools. Trainers will also elaborate on features that allow both teachers and parents to monitor student progress and highlight student access/rights settings and virtual classroom management, looking at how these affect students’ privacy and online behaviours.
Parents will be given a choice to attend sessions in French and English and focusing on the use of TEAMS in primary or secondary. This project is planned as a joint initiative with other Brussels APEEEs.

MUNUCCLE - Uccle Model United Nations - 3rd installation (virtual)
Programme for students and teachers: MUNUCCLE is a simulation of the United Nations in French, Dutch and English. The prestigious initiative will be hosted virtually (on WebEx) by EEBI this year over three days on 2-4 October 2020 preceded by four evenings of expert conferences from 28 September to 1 October. EEBI’s Model UN is organised by our students for students from different schools and is a unique experience during which participants will have the opportunity to represent a country’s stance on certain topics and debate with others to bring their country’s ideas forward.
This year’s overarching themes for the conference are “Demand more social justice, give power back to the people, and save the planet". The event offers opportunities suiting everyone’s interests: those wishing to improve their research, debate and public speaking skills can participate as delegates, and those wishing to practice their management skills can apply to be part of the organising team. MUNUCCLE is one of a series of Model UN events that take place in the European Schools and across Europe.
More than 50 students from EEBI are involved in the project as part of the organizational team and committee chairs (25) or delegates (30). There will be twelve schools participating, more than 160 students from European Schools here in Belgium (EEB3, EEB4, EEMol) and in Culham, England, French speaking schools from France, Spain and Turkey, for a total of nearly 200 delegates.

Reducing Food Waste in the Secondary School Canteen (Waste Estimation System - IWES)
Student-designed project to design a smart food waste estimation system for the secondary school canteen. Food waste is a major global concern and this project aims to raise awareness on the issue and to lead to a considerable decrease in total food waste in our secondary school canteen. The system to be designed (IWES) uses artificial intelligence technologies to estimate the mass of wasted food and to monitor food consumption. A database will be created tracking the amount of food waste. The project is divided into 3 main parts: a photo triggering mechanism set over the food trays conveyor; AI programs to process the photos and output an estimation of the food left on the plate; and a mobile app to display the data from the database so that the users track food waste over time.
After having tested the project at EEBI, the ultimate goal is to bring this technology to all the European Schools and to organize an annual food waste competition where schools would compete to waste the least food. This would give an incentive to students to revise their food consumption habits and to act more ecologically.

Climate Neutral European School
Programme for students and teachers. The aim is to engage the students of EEB1 into the energy transition through concrete climate change mitigation actions on the school site. The plan and activities would be prepared, quantified and implemented through cooperation between volunteering students and professors. The project would cover the cost of partnering with a startup company (https://www.forgood.eco/en/home-2/) who would drastically reduce the price of their license to demonstrate the potential of their application on a school site.

Let’s garden at school! Project "jardinons à l'école"!
This project aims at introducing nursery students to ecological approaches through a variety of activities: composting, recycling, gardening, analysing food waste and packaging, etc. The pilot phase would initially involve only the FR sections but could expand to other sections. The APEEE has given partial funding to cover purchase of grains, books and other small items. The school should be approached for bigger compost and recycling projects.

Citizens of the World / Citoyens du monde
The project aims to educate Berkendael nursery and P2 FR and ES students in eco-citizenship through a variety of initiatives: a meeting with an author and an oceanographer, the development of a book collection and through several ecological campaigns. The objective is to sensitize students to become responsible citizens of tomorrow and to give life to the school-family partnership.
The project will start with FR and ES classes, and then be expanded to students of other classes and finally to the whole school through close work with our librarian Sylviane. The added value of this project is to bring to life an inter-class project within the school, to sensitize the students and the whole school to eco-responsible gestures while energizing one of the meeting places common to all: the library. The APEEE ‘s partial funding is allocated to contribute towards setting up material for the library.

Projet Citoyens du Monde 2020-2021 - BILAN
Creative Food Art Workshops “Let’s have fun with food”
Ten workshops to be organised between January and June 2020 for P1 and P2 pupils in the French section. Each workshop will last 1h30. In the workshops, the pupils will get to make their own food art with healthy and organic ingredients, mostly seasonal and local vegetables and fruits. They will be encouraged to explore and exercise their creativity in turning simple and healthy food ingredients into interesting and fascinating snacks and treats. When they make it, they eat it!
The aim of Creative Food Art Workshops is to improve pupils’ eating habits. They will develop new creative skills and they will learn about healthy tasty food while having fun. We know that eating fruits and vegetables as early as possible is important for health, and we are all concerned about health problems, such obesity and diabetes. But how to get pupils eating more fruits and vegetables? The answer could be “Make it fun!” The idea behind the project is that pupils transform food into the most creative and impressive art.

Berkendael Chess Project / Jeux d'échecs à l'école
The aim of this project is to instill a chess culture in the P4-P5 levels at Berkendael through the purchase of materials (boards, wooden pieces, mural, book collection). Sets would be used at break times and during European Hours. The game of chess teaches valuable educational lesson. In addition to improving the learner's concentration, patience and perseverance while developing creativity, intuition, memory and analytical skills, it also stimulates the development of skills in mathematics and mother tongue.
The project has a good community building element and tie-in with Uccle’s chess club and competitive chess teams. The APEEE accepted to partially fund the project. It was suggested that a starter collection of equipment be purchased first and other equipment later as the activity grows in strength and interest.

E-Teaching: Peer Training Pilot Project for Secondary School Science Teachers
The primary aim of this project is to overcome some of the obstacles faced by teachers with online teaching and in transferring in situ classroom methodology to the online environment. This will be accomplished through the purchase of a school set of easy-to-use graphics tablets + styluses for long-term loan to teachers as the basis for a several months' peer training programme. The tablets can be stored in school with possibility for check-out.
Peer training will be offered to individuals or small groups of teachers on or off site. This will initially target teachers in the Biology and Chemistry departments (most of whom also teach Integrated Science), training them and encouraging them to experiment with new techniques without the need to invest in expensive equipment. The project can be extended to other subject areas, namely Physics and Mathematics.
The use of a stylus is necessary for science and maths teachers to take advantage of TEAMS Notebook/OneNote/WhiteBoard, all of which enable the live sharing of lecture notes online during distance or in situ teaching. As a platform One Note will give pupils continuous access to lesson material, and also make material available for those unable to attend class. They can immediately help in the teaching of certain topics online, e.g. those that involve mathematical problems, structural formulae in Chemistry, genetics problems. This will allow teachers to better simulate the teaching that might normally take place in a classroom through use of Smartboard, overhead projector, blackboard etc. These practices will, in turn, promote the use of Smartboard, One Note etc in normal classroom teaching.

E-Teaching and Peer Training Pilot Project Comments
STEAM Challenges (eTwinning project)
The use of Lego WeDO 'robotics' construction and programming kits to promote the acquisition of experimental skills and the exploration of the S.T.E.M. and S.T.E.A.M. sector, allowing children to learn how to work as scientists and in groups, learn about computational thinking unplugged and plugged. Students from different schools, separated in international groups, should work together to find the solution for each challenge. The solution to each challenge will give the opportunity to students to participate in interesting S.T.E.M. activities.
The founders of the project, Thoma Ralia (EEB I – site Berkendael) and Farasopoulos Nektarios (Primary school of Ano Syros) are eTwinnners who have already won Greek and European eTwinning quality labels and organise workshops for teachers about STEM and STEAM education.

Francis Pirotta Creative Arts Prize - 2020-2021 Edition
Art competition for students: An annual art competition aimed at primary and nursery classes to celebrate Francis Pirotta's short but creative life and ensure that his spirit and determination remain alive through the creativity of other children. Francis Pirotta used to spend countless hours drawing. It was by far his favourite pastime and an opening into the world of this remarkable boy with an all-too-short life.
The prize is intended to stimulate pupil's artistic creativity, with an emphasis on teamwork as the prize is awarded to whole classes. The teachers and art coordinator are heavily implicated in the programme, and a committee including the teachers, the family, the parents and the students decides on the theme of the competition each year and also serve as the judging panel. The APEEE funds or co-funds the prize, a school trip or other gifts for the winning classes.
In 2019, the prize for the theme "Other Places, Other Worlds" was awarded to P5DK and MAT IT, while the 2020 edition with the theme "Flags for Nature" was won by MATEN, P4ENa and P5MT. The 22020 submissions were part of the European Commission's 2020 Greenweek Programme.
The 2020-2021 edition of the prize will honour the memory of Francis' teacher, Rachel Napthine, who sadly passed away this year. Rachel was actively involved in this project. This edition will also extend the competition to the Berkendael campus.

Workshops will be hosted by specialised coaches from the organisation "Les Loulous Philosophes / Les Ados Philos". Languages to be used: English and French.
The main goal is to inspire secondary students to reflect on the importance of core values for their lives and social community. EuropaInCanto - Opera - 2nd Installment
This musical project is open to all sections in maternelle, primary and S1-S3. The aim is to launch a competition among the pupils where they will be invited/trained to invent a fable on the theme of gender equality, with a short text (max 200 words) and a comic strip illustration. This competition will be accompanied by the learning of the Opera Elisir d’amore by G. Donizetti, highlighting the topic of gender equality in the piece.
In this project we will draw from the expertise of Europa InCanto and of OPERAMUS asbl, who have also been active during the lock down with the production of a virtual choir formed by 700 children across Europe singing Turandot. During the COVID-19 emergency, Europa InCanto put in place a method combining virtual classes, creativity and artistic content based on the Audiobook of Elisir d’amore which reached more than 800,000 viewings between February and April 2020
The project is supported by an App and original multimedia material (audio visual) available for free to students and teachers. The method can be also be followed in e-learning modality. Audio-visual material will be used by educators and training will be given to both teachers and students by experts (vocal coaches, comic strips artists).
The project will promote gender equality and fighting related stereotypes among children and young people through competitions stimulating their STEAM skills, creating a solidarity and cultural link between the young participants, showing that everyone, regardless of
his/her gender, socio-economic and cultural background, has similar potential to create and be a “genius” (referring also to the life of Leonardo Da Vinci).

International Choir Competition, St Petersburg
Co-funding of the EEBI Secondary Choir's participation in the 23rd International Petersburg Choir Festival, originally scheduled to take place in Russia, 25-30 March 2020. This Project for students and EEBI staff involves the preparation of a choral repertoire by the EEBI Secondary Choir. According to the competition rules each participating choir has to perform 3 pieces: Sacred or classic composition written before year 1940; folk song arrangement or a composition based on folk tunes; contemporary composition written after 1980. This requires particular regular rehearsals and attendance of vocal workshops (Germany 15-17 Nov 2019)
The objectives are to: demonstrate the artistic, social and psychological benefits of singing in a choir; promote vocal creativity in the school community; raise the technical and artistic level of the EEBI Secondary Choir; exchange experiences and establish cooperation between other competing choirs during the 23rd St. Petersburg Choir Festival RADUGA, Russia; promote the European School of Brussels I abroad and among choirs from all over the world.

Drug Addiction Prevention Conference for Secondary Classes (S1-S7) in Italian language
Two-part drug addiction prevention conference aimed at Italian students from S1 to S7.
Teenagers are curious, strong and at the same time fragile in the path that leads to adulthood. During this journey, adolescents are exposed to the temptation of alcohol, drugs and various risky behaviors. Not only in bars and clubs, but also around and sometimes inside the school.
Speaker Giorgia Benusiglio, well-known Italian psychologist, was miraculously saved at the age of 17, thanks to a liver transplant, after having taken a small amount of ecstasy. From that day on, she decided to turn her experience into a life lesson, informing and talking to adolescents about the risks associated with taking drugs. For 12 years, she has been carrying out a prevention activity telling her story in schools, so that her mistake can serve as a lesson to other young people, providing them with the information that she did not have.
The conference is divided into two parts: in the first Giorgia talks about her experience and in the second part, students engages in direct exchange.

Cycle de Conférences "Sciences et société"
A "Cycle of Conferences" given by university professor and aimed at S6-S7. The purpose is to: encourage the dissemination of scientific culture in general and mathematical culture in particular; contribute to a better understanding of the issues of science and research in society and the role of mathematics; improve the general perception of mathematics and in particular the understanding of its impact, usefulness and vitality among young people and the general public; inspire our students to become engaged students in scientific fields and more particularly in mathematics; meet leading personalities such as Nobel Prize winners, professors from the College de France or CNRS Gold Medal winners.
