MUNUCCLE - Uccle Model United Nations - 2nd edition
Programme for students: MUNUCCLE is a simulation of the United Nations in French, Dutch and English. The prestigious initiative will be hosted by EEBI over three days on 4-6 October 2019 in the European Commission’s Conference Centre, Albert Borschette. EEBI’s Model UN is organised by our students for students from different schools and is a unique experience during which participants will have the opportunity to represent a country’s stance on certain topics and debate with others to bring their country’s ideas forward.
This year’s overarching theme for the conference is “Remodelons notre présent pour un avenir durable”. The event offers opportunities suiting everyone’s interests: those wishing to improve their research, debate and public speaking skills can participate as delegates, and those wishing to practice their management skills can apply to be part of the organising team. MUNUCCLE is one of a series of Model UN events that take place in the European Schools and across Europe.

Project Report - MUNUccle 2019
EuropaInCanto - Italian Opera Project - 1st edition
Programme for students and teachers: two half-day workshops for teachers, in-class work with students and performances. This project has the purpose of creating a new, young audience, aware of the importance of the heritage of the Opera, and capable of truly appreciating it: an educational path aiming at giving children the chance to learn more about the opera, but also to enter and to be protagonists during the final representation. The project will start by analysing and staging the Turandot by Giacomo Puccini, one of the most remarkable titles in the history of the Italian Opera. The learning process will be supported by specific educational tools handed out to each participant. Among these there are an engaging text-book and an interactive karaoke DVD, thanks to which students will be able to practice by themselves. The project also foresees the inclusion of people with disability (hard of hearing). The project will be capped off with a performance on 21 February 2020 at the W:Hall Auditorium in Brussels with children from several schools participating.

EEB1 pupils rehearsing for the Turandot in October 2019
Francis Pirotta Creative Arts Prize - 2nd edition
Competition for students: an annual art competition aimed at primary and nursery classes to celebrate Francis Pirotta's short but creative life and ensure that his spirit and determination remain alive through the creativity of other children. Francis Pirotta used to spend countless hours drawing. It was by far the favourite pastime and an opening into the world of this remarkable boy with an all-too-short life. The prize is organised annually by his former teachers and carers and is awarded to whole classes. The competition is open to all language sections and is split into two age groups: Mat-P2; P3-P5. The jury consists of teachers, APEEE, the CdE (students' committee) and the Pirotta family and the final decision also considers a popular vote of primary students.
The theme for 2019-2020 is "Flags for Nature". It was chosen according to Francis’ interest (he loved flags) and also to this year’s school theme, which happened to be nature.
Debrief: Entries were exhibited between 17 and 21 February (the month of Francis’ birth) in the Erasmus building, and the final results were announced on 21 February 2020. The prize was awarded to classes MATEN, P4ENa and P5MT. Each child in the winning classes received a T-shirt with their flag printed on it. All the flags were printed on fabric and hung outside the facade of the Château building on the EEB1 campus. They were also exhibited at this year’s edition of EU Green Week, 19-22 October 2020.

The Rainbow Group - Gender and Sexuality Resource Group (GSRG)
Group for students: the provision of seed funding for the launch of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Group (GSRG). The aim of the GSRG is to create a safe space for members of the student body who identify as LGBTQ+. The group provides support and a sense of community but also to be a source of information for students who may need to find organisations and information that can aid them in their journey. Furthermore, the group raises awareness of gender and sexuality issues within the greater school community. More concretely, the group hopes to organise talks from guest speakers about important and current issues as well as to engage in charity work in support of causes that champion LGBTQ+ issues. Topics will include: “coming out” stories, representation in books and movies and music, asexuality, bisexuality – pansexuality, the power of language, icons and role models, LGBTQ+ history and rights, LGBTQ+ rights and the EU, LQBTQ+ rights and the rest of the world, organisations and activism, sexual health/sexual education, “politically correct” culture.
The group has been set up under the guidance of two members of the teaching staff and is run by a board of students who oversee the day to day running and organization of the weekly meetings.

Science and Maths Coding Club
Group for students: this coding club given by secondary teachers for upper secondary students will allow them to explore numerical tools for science and maths well beyond the formal syllabuses. Students will meet once a week for a double period and engage in projects and challenges aimed to explore algorithms at their most fundamental level. Software will include P5js and MatLab as frameworks to introduce concepts of code. The club aims to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for aspiring science coders, where all levels of knowledge are welcome.

Project Description
STEAM Challenges (eTwinning project) - Greek Robotics Project
Project for students and teachers: the use of Lego WeDO 'robotics' construction and programming kits to promote the acquisition of experimental skills and the exploration of the S.T.E.M. and S.T.E.A.M. sector, allowing children to learn how to work as scientists and in groups, learn about computational thinking unplugged and plugged. Students from different schools, separated in international groups, should work together to find the solution for each challenge. The solution to each challenge will give the opportunity to students to participate in interesting S.T.E.M. activities.
The founders of the project, Thoma Ralia (EEB I – site Berkendael) and Farasopoulos Nektarios (Primary school of Ano Syros) are eTwinnners who have already won Greek and European eTwinning quality labels and organise workshops for teachers about STEM and STEAM education.

Reinforcement of Values Series (S3 and S5)
Workshops for students: a series of talks for all S3 and S5 classes across sections, aimed at reinforcing values among teenagers to complete what is done at home and by the school. Among possible themes: “What is a successful/happy life?”, “Development of self-esteem”, “Difference between real and virtual”, “Importance of truth”, “How to say no (with role playing)”, “How to deal with toxic relationships/friendships (for example in a class)”, etc.
Interactive workshops of 25-30 students will take place during religion and ethics classes or in the Project Week period. Each session will correspond to one period of class. Workshops will be hosted by specialised coaches from the organisation "Les Loulous Philosophes / Les Ados Philos".
The main goal is to inspire secondary students to reflect on the importance of core values for their lives and social community. The aim of this projects is the reinforcement of values in teenagers to complete what is done at home and at school. Workshops are complemented by testimonials, debates and cine-forums.

Save and Learn to Save - Polish First-Aid Training
Workshop for students and teachers: pre-medical first aid training for Polish students and teachers in Uccle. Learning first aid is an invaluable life-skill. It helps children become more risk aware and equips them with skills to keep themselves safe and help themselves or others if involved in a medical emergency. It could save their lives.
25 teachers and 300 pupils from the Primary and Secondary Polish section will be trained over five days (21-25 of October 2019). The training will be run by eight highly qualified professionals from the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (GOCC) foundation, which is a fully regulated and highly recognised NGO with the aim to preserve children's lives and health in Poland. The highly experienced medical and emergency service professionals from the GOCC Foundation have trained to date over 30,000 teachers from over 12,000 Polish schools which represents 92% of elementary schools in Poland. This has allowed nearly 3 million students to learn the basics of first aid.

Positive Communication
Conference for parents: a conference on positive communication by the group Naturissimo to be held on 15 November 2019 at the Committee of Regions. The project aims at enhancing communication between teachers and pupils, and parents and children, using the Faber and Mazlish approach. This approach focuses on developing empathy, increasing collaboration, boosting kids’ independence and self- esteem, and helping to manage conflicts. It will increase efficiency in communication and create a better environment with a focus on cooperation and collaboration both for teachers/pupils and for parents/children. The trainers will demonstrate communication skills for interacting with pupils/children.

Conference on Nutrition
Conference for parents: Maddy Lecomte, naturopath and expert in nutrition, will provide information on nutrition based on the newest scientific research. She will focus on the definition and benefits of a balanced diet, myths and truths about nutrition, and tips for parents. The conference will also highlight how bad food choices can influence the health of our families. As a result of the conference, parents will get information on healthy, balanced diet rules and the benefits that this can have on children, including a positive impact on behaviours and hyperactivity, and boosting concentration.
Debrief: The lunchtime conference took place on 18 February 2020 with 69 participants.

Staying Safe Online - Guide for Parents and Carers
Conference for parents: the conference aims to explore children’s online behaviour and the risks they may be exposed to, when navigating online. Some of the key topics that will be discussed are cyberbullying; sexting; online pornography and mental health. Specifically, it aims to present some empirical evidence of these risks and advice for parents on how to help keep their children safe. The increased awareness should help preventing disciplinary problems and risky behaviours and contributing to the well-being of students.
Debrief: This webinar which tool place on 30 June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic replaced the originally funded live conference entitled Exploring Digital Risks and Children’s Evolving Online Behaviour, intended for Autumn 2019. There were 311 participants.

Three Internet Danger Conferences
Conferences for parents: a series of three french language conferences on the dangers of the internet. This project aims at raising awareness among parents on digital challenges such as videogames, internet and social media, and cyberbullying through lunchtime conferences by speaker Christophe Butstraeten.
Debrief: Two conferences were held, one parent conference on 5 June 2019 and an evening conference aimed at students along with parents on 28 January 2020.

Croissance Workshops for Sexuality and Affectivity
Workshops for students: this series of workshops aims to educate secondary students about affective and sexual relationships. The trainers will develop the values of self-esteem, respect for oneself and for the other, true friendship and true love. The teenagers shall ultimately feel that they are not the only ones to have a desire for beautiful and respectful relationships, for commitment and for truth. They are taught to trust their own feelings. They are taught to be led by their own deep desires rather than by fear, advertising or peer pressure.

International Choir Competition, St Petersburg
Travel subsidy for students and teachers: co-funding of the EEBI Secondary Choir's participation in the 23rd International Petersburg Choir Festival scheduled to take place in Russia, 25-30 March 2020. This project involves the preparation of a choral repertoire by the EEBI Secondary Choir. According to the competition rules each participating choir has to perform 3 pieces: sacred or classic composition written before year 1940; folk song arrangement or a composition based on folk tunes; contemporary composition written after 1980. This requires particular regular rehearsals and attendance of vocal workshops (Germany 15-17 Nov 2019)
The objectives are to: demonstrate the artistic, social and psychological benefits of singing in a choir; promote vocal creativity in the school community; raise the technical and artistic level of the EEBI Secondary Choir; exchange experiences and establish cooperation between other competing choirs during the 23rd St. Petersburg Choir Festival RADUGA, Russia; promote the European School of Brussels I abroad and among choirs from all over the world.

Climate Neutral European School
Programme for students and teachers: the aim is to engage the students of EEB1 into the energy transition through concrete climate change mitigation actions on the school site. The plan and activities would be prepared, quantified and implemented through cooperation between volunteering students and professors. The project would cover the cost of partnering with a startup company (https://www.forgood.eco/en/home-2/) who would drastically reduce the price of their license to demonstrate the potential of their application on a school site.

Complex Drug and Addiction Prevention - Hungarian Secondary Programme - 4th edition
Workshop for students and parents: the programme – accredited in the Hungarian education system – is designed to help teenagers to explore the social, cultural and economic context of addiction and drug use, be it legal or illegal. Four trainers from a Hungarian specialised organisation are engaged to deliver the training sessions in the mother tongue of the students. A wide variety of tools are used to help this process – including lectures, team work, cooperative tasks, role playing, elements of contests, drama pedagogy along with corporal expression exercises and presentations. On top of student trainings an evening parental forum will be organised. Direct impacts of the project: (1) higher awareness of consequences of addiction and substance abuse (prevention), (2) better ability of identifying and better tackling of abuse (management by parents and students).

Drug Addiction Prevention Conference for Italian Secondary
Conference for students: two-part drug addiction prevention conference aimed at Italian students from S1 to S7.
Teenagers are curious, strong and at the same time fragile in the path that leads to adulthood. During this journey, adolescents are exposed to the temptation of alcohol, drugs and various risky behaviors. Not only in bars and clubs, but also around and sometimes inside the school.
Speaker Giorgia Benusiglio, well-known Italian psychologist, was miraculously saved at the age of 17, thanks to a liver transplant, after having taken a small amount of ecstasy. From that day on, she decided to turn her experience into a life lesson, informing and talking to adolescents about the risks associated with taking drugs. For 12 years, she has been carrying out a prevention activity telling her story in schools, so that her mistake can serve as a lesson to other young people, providing them with the information that she did not have.
The conference is divided into two parts: in the first Giorgia talks about her experience and in the second part, students engages in direct exchange.

“Let’s have fun with food” - French Creative Food Art Workshops
Workshops for students: ten workshops to be organised between January and June 2020 for P1 and P2 pupils in the French section. Each workshop will last 1h30. In the workshops, the pupils will get to make their own food art with healthy and organic ingredients, mostly seasonal and local vegetables and fruits. They will be encouraged to explore and exercise their creativity in turning simple and healthy food ingredients into interesting and fascinating snacks and treats. When they make it, they eat it!
The aim of Creative Food Art Workshops is to improve pupils’ eating habits. They will develop new creative skills and they will learn about healthy tasty food while having fun. We know that eating fruits and vegetables as early as possible is important for health, and we are all concerned about health problems, such obesity and diabetes. But how to get pupils eating more fruits and vegetables? The answer could be “Make it fun!” The idea behind the project is that pupils transform food into the most creative and impressive art.

Cycle de Conférences "Sciences et société"
Conferences for students: a "Cycle of Conferences" given by university professor and aimed at S6-S7. The purpose is to: encourage the dissemination of scientific culture in general and mathematical culture in particular; contribute to a better understanding of the issues of science and research in society and the role of mathematics; improve the general perception of mathematics and in particular the understanding of its impact, usefulness and vitality among young people and the general public; inspire our students to become engaged students in scientific fields and more particularly in mathematics; meet leading personalities such as Nobel Prize winners, professors from the College de France or CNRS Gold Medal winners.

Meeting Interesting People – Through Africa on Bicycle
Talk with students: a multilingual traveler having cycled through Africa will describe the people he met and share interesting and sometimes scary stories about Africa's natural world. The conversation with students will stress the importance of nature and clean environment for humans, with a special focus on access to fresh water, as well as the importance of travel and of meeting people from different cultures and becoming familiar with their traditions, habits and beliefs in order to foster tolerance.

Communiquer sans mots - French Language Project
Project for students: the aim is to make pupils aware of disability and to introduce them to another universal alphabet. The reflection will revolve around the question of language and communication: Can we communicate without verbal language? What are the alternatives? The project includes the reading of a novel about a young blind and deaf teenager ("The story of Helen Keller") and a meeting/workshop with members of the Centre francophone de la langue des signes. Complementary work will be done on interviews given by Emmanuelle Laborit, with the reading of excerpts from her story "Le Cri de la mouette" (The Cry of the Seagull).
